Counterfeit retatrutide: regulatory status and how identity testing tells a real sample from a fake
By Vitality Chems · Published · updated · vendor-authored explanatory note
Short answer
Retatrutide is an investigational compound with no FDA approval, it cannot be used in compounding under federal law, and FDA has warned online sellers that a "research use only" label does not make a product legal when it is sold for human use. Counterfeit or mislabeled material is common enough that FDA tells consumers not to buy it. For a research buyer, the only reliable check is identity by mass: an LC-MS result near m/z 1183.1 ([M+4H]4+) or 946.7 ([M+5H]5+), on a report the lab itself confirms for your lot.
Catalog materials discussed on this page
| Ion | Expected m/z | Note |
|---|---|---|
| [M+3H]3+ | 1577.16 | Triply protonated ion. |
| [M+4H]4+ | 1183.13 | Quadruply protonated ion. |
| [M+5H]5+ | 946.70 | Five-fold protonated ion. |
| Average MW | 4731.4 g/mol | What a deconvoluted average mass should approach. |
What FDA has said
FDA states that retatrutide and cagrilintide cannot be used in compounding under federal law, are not components of FDA-approved drugs, and have not been found safe and effective for any condition. It has warned telehealth companies, ingredient distributors and outsourcing facilities over retatrutide.
FDA has also issued warning letters to online sellers whose products were labeled "for research use only" or "not for human consumption" but were marketed for human use. In those letters FDA said the label did not change what the website showed the products were intended for. The lesson for anyone in this category: a research-use label must match how a product is actually described, sold and shipped.
Why counterfeit samples slip through
HPLC purity alone cannot identify a compound. A vial can show a single clean peak at 99% area and still be the wrong peptide, a cheaper analog, or a truncated sequence. Published analyses of falsified peptide products have found wrong active ingredients, wrong amounts or none at all.
Identity needs mass. Look for a report that names LC-MS (or another MS method), prints the observed m/z or deconvoluted mass, and compares it with the expected value for the stated formula. Then confirm the report with the issuing lab for the exact lot on your vial.
- Lot on the report matches the vial.
- An MS method is named and an observed mass is printed.
- The observed mass matches the expected value within the lab's stated tolerance.
- The lab's own lookup or the lab by email confirms the report.
Our position
Vitality Chems supplies retatrutide only as a laboratory research material. It is not a drug, not for human or animal use, and we give no dosing or use guidance. We do not compound, prescribe or dispense, and we are not a pharmacy or an FDA-registered outsourcing facility. Our published retatrutide reports, including which ones carry LC-MS identity, are listed in the COA dataset.

Frequently asked
What is retatrutide's FDA status?
FDA says it is not a component of any approved drug product and has not been found safe and effective for any condition.
Can retatrutide be compounded?
FDA states that retatrutide cannot be used in compounding under federal law.
Does a research use only label make a product legal?
Not by itself. FDA has said such labels do not change a product's status when the seller's other marketing contradicts the label.
How do you test retatrutide identity?
With mass spectrometry. Expected monoisotopic m/z values are about 1577.2 ([M+3H]3+), 1183.1 ([M+4H]4+) and 946.7 ([M+5H]5+), from the formula C221H342N46O68.
